Giving Back for Mother's Day: OLSS Volunteers at the Community FoodBank of NJ

Nearly one million people in New Jersey face hunger every day. Nearly 300,000 of them are children. When they don’t have enough food to eat, they can suffer direct and dramatic effects on their physical development and mental well being.

When learning this, we asked, how can we help make a difference?

The Community FoodBank of NJ provided the answer.  This amazing organization works with a network of more than one thousand community partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters, to bring food to our food insecure neighbors.  We woke up early and spent the morning with our Moms, daughters, spouses and friends in Hillside, NJ at the FoodBank’s impressive distribution center packing over 1,800 bags of food for families in need.  The FoodBank’s Family Pack Program provides bags full of supplemental, nutritious food for hungry children and their families over the weekend.  When a child is food insecure, he or she is at risk of going hungry. Participating children rely on free school meals on weekdays, and weekend food resources may be limited. To combat this problem, the food bags we packed will be picked up by participating schools, and distributed every Friday to the children to bring home for the weekend.

The Family Pack Program currently serves 1,500 children from 31 schools located in 10 cities: Elizabeth, Newark, New Brunswick, Perth Amboy, Irvington, East Orange, Orange, Harrison, Roselle and Plainfield.

Working side by side with our family, friends and co-workers, knowing we were helping many families in our community who need food, was the perfect way to kick off Mother’s Day weekend!  We can’t wait to do it again…
